Project Overview

Corbeau established a comprehensive multi-level survey control network within a major multipurpose sports arena undergoing phased renovations and facility improvements. The project required the development of a reliable spatial reference framework spanning multiple levels of the structure to support laser scan registration, construction layout, and future as-built documentation. 

Working within an active venue demanded careful coordination, precision field procedures, and a control network capable of supporting ongoing construction activities while maintaining consistent positional accuracy throughout the facility.  

The Challenge

Establishing survey control throughout a large, occupied sports arena presented a unique combination of technical and logistical challenges. The project required connecting multiple interior levels while maintaining consistent horizontal and vertical accuracy across the entire structure. 

Field operations were performed around active facility operations, construction activities, restricted access areas, and strict safety requirements. Numerous confined spaces and maintenance corridors limited instrument setup locations and often required creative surveying solutions to maintain uninterrupted lines of sight. 

Additional complexity arose from connecting control between separate sections of the arena. Long-distance observations were performed across the facility to verify that independent control networks remained properly aligned, ensuring positional consistency throughout the structure rather than treating each floor or section as an isolated survey. 

Maintaining this level of precision across a large, multi-level environment required disciplined field procedures, continual verification, and rigorous quality control.

Our Approach

The project began by establishing primary survey control around the exterior of the facility using GNSS observations and precision differential leveling. This exterior framework served as the foundation for transferring control throughout the interior of the structure. 

From the ground level upward, horizontal and vertical control was systematically extended through each floor using robotic total stations, precision traverses, multiple observation rounds, and closed level loops. Every control point was independently verified through redundant observations to ensure consistency across the network. 

Where architectural constraints prevented direct lines of sight, alternative surveying strategies were developed to extend control through confined maintenance areas and intermediate service levels. In several locations, temporary access through ceiling and mechanical spaces was required to establish uninterrupted survey geometry. 

To validate the integrity of the network, long-range observations were performed between opposing sections of the arena. Rather than relying solely on adjacent control points, survey measurements crossed significant portions of the structure to confirm that independently established control remained in agreement across multiple levels and building sections. 

The completed network provided a consistent spatial reference system capable of supporting current construction activities while serving as a long-term control framework for future renovation and documentation efforts. 


Results Section

The completed control network established a reliable, facility-wide spatial framework capable of supporting high-precision construction and documentation activities. 

The network improved the consistency of laser scan registration, provided dependable control for construction layout, and minimized cumulative positional error across multiple floors and building sections. By maintaining a unified coordinate system throughout the facility, future survey work and renovation efforts could reference a single, verified control network rather than establishing independent control for each phase of construction. 

This project demonstrates Corbeau's ability to deliver precise survey control within complex, occupied environments where accuracy, consistency, and careful coordination are essential to project success.
